Planning a breast augmentation? Here are some of the breast augmentation FAQs our clients ask us at Palms Wellington Plastic Surgery.
What Is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is also known as breast enlargement. It is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of your breasts. Breast augmentation is traditionally achieved by inserting implants into the breasts in order to increase their size. The reasons our clients pursue breast enlargement vary widely, but some common motivations include:
- Increasing breast volume following pregnancy or nursing
- Enhancing the size and shape of the breasts if they’re thought to be too small
- Increasing the size of one breast to achieve symmetry
- Reconstructing the breasts after an injury or mastectomy
No matter why you are interested in this procedure, we’ll be there to support you throughout the entire process.
How Is Breast Augmentation Performed?
For traditional breast augmentation using implants, we start with a small incision through which we insert the implant. We generally perform this outpatient procedure while you’re under general anesthesia.
Where do we make the incision? The location depends on what we think the best strategy is according to the type of breast augmentation you want and how your body works. One commonly used technique involves making an incision in the lower portion of the breast, while other techniques involve making incisions around the areola or the armpit.
What Types of Implants Are Used for Breast Augmentation?
Implants are great tools for increasing breast volume by one or more bra cup sizes. What types of implants do we use? Two common implant materials are saline and silicone. Saline implants are filled with a sterile salt water solution, while silicone implants have silicone gel.
Both types of implants come in different sizes. There are options for smooth or textured shells. These implants are inserted either under the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscles.
We help our clients decide which type is best for them based on the amount of natural breast tissue they have, their body type, and their personal preferences. For example, some clients choose silicone gel because it tends to feel more like natural breast tissue.
How Long Do Results Last?
Breast augmentation is not a one-time procedure. Instead, the longevity of your results varies depending on:
- The type of implants you receive
- The surgical technique used
- Other individual factors, like how your body responds to the augmentation
On average, clients’ breast augmentations last between 10 and 15 years. With regular follow-ups, we can monitor your implants and make sure they’re functioning properly.
What Is Autologous Breast Augmentation?
Autologous breast augmentation is an increasingly popular procedure that uses your own body fat rather than artificial implants to increase your breast volume. This procedure starts with liposuction on areas of the body where you have excess fat so that the fat can be injected into the breasts. Usually, fat is pulled from the abdomen or thighs. Autologous breast augmentation can provide a more natural look and feel than traditional implants.
What Is Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation?
Fat transfer breast augmentation is just another way of describing autologous breast augmentation.
What Are the Benefits of Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation offers numerous benefits that can enhance your quality of life. One of the immediate benefits you’ll notice is the improvement in the overall size and shape of your breasts. Changing their size and shape can help you achieve a more balanced and proportionate figure.
If you’ve recently experienced changes in your body due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss, breast augmentation can help restore lost volume so that your breasts appear fuller and firmer. If you have uneven or asymmetrical breasts, then breast augmentation can help you achieve symmetry.
Can Breast Augmentation Affect Breastfeeding?
Most women find that they are able to breastfeed after breast augmentation. However, the ability to breastfeed may depend on where the incision is placed and the type of surgery you receive. If you plan to breastfeed in the future, it’s important you tell us this during your consultation so we can plan with that in mind.
How Should I Prepare for Breast Augmentation?
The preparation process starts with a detailed consultation where we review your medical history, discuss your expectations, and explain the procedure in detail. During the consultation, we’ll offer several instructions on how to prepare for surgery.
We may ask you to get a mammogram or breast ultrasound before surgery. You’ll also need to stop smoking and avoid medications that can increase bleeding. The pre- and post-operative instructions vary slightly from patient to patient, but we’ll provide you with tailored instructions so that you can have the best experience possible.
What Is the Recovery Process Like?
Our postoperative instructions usually include lots of rest and limited movement to support a smooth recovery. We apply bandages immediately after surgery to help with the healing process and minimize movement of the breast tissue. Once we remove the bandages, we’ll recommend a specialized surgical bra for you to wear for several weeks.
What Can I Expect During the Recovery Period?
The recovery period will vary from person to person, but most patients return to work after a week or two. You’ll experience some swelling and discomfort for the first few days, which we’ll help you manage with pain medication. You’ll want to avoid any strenuous exercise and lifting heavy objects for at least six weeks, or until we clear you for such activities.
