What Are the Benefits of Using Prescription Medication for Hair Loss?
Prescription medication for hair loss offers patients a convenient alternative to in-office treatments. This medication can be taken in the comfort of the patient’s own home, while still giving them the hair restoration results they desire. This treatment can be used as a primary treatment for patients who experience hair loss early in life or are not ready for invasive treatment. It can also be used conjunction with other hair restoration treatments.
Currently, the only prescription medication that our practice offers for hair restoration is Propecia.
What is Propecia?
Propecia is currently one of the only oral medications on the market that is FDA-approved to treat male-pattern baldness. This drug works by targeting one of the most fundamental causes of hormone-based hair loss.
Finasteride, the active drug in Propecia, blocks the action of an enzyme called five-alpha-reductase that changes testosterone into another hormone called DHT. When left untreated, DHT causes hair loss in men. Because Propecia can only block the action of this enzyme for as long as finasteride is in the body, the results of treatment only last as long for as long as the patient continues to take the medication.
Once an individual begins taking Propecia, he should expect to wait at least three months before seeing any visible changes in hair growth.
Am I a Candidate?
Unfortunately, Propecia cannot adequately address female pattern baldness. Because of this, this medication is typically only taken by males. While most patients experience no adverse side effects during and after treatment with Propecia, a very small percentage of men who take it experience sexual dysfunction or adverse effects on overall mood.
