A facelift, more formally known as a rhytidectomy, is a type of cosmetic surgery done to reduce or eliminate the signs of aging. It can be done to tighten skin, reduce wrinkles and/or remove excess fat and skin.
Types of Procedures
The traditional full facelift is the type most people think of when they hear the word “facelift.” During this procedure, the surgeon operates on the entire face. It often provides more dramatic results than other types, but it usually requires a longer recovery time.
In a mid facelift, the surgeon concentrates on the middle of the face. He can tighten the tissues around the cheeks and below the eyes. The surgeon may also enhance the contours or cheekbones.
A mini facelift also concentrates on a smaller area than a traditional facelift. Mini facelifts usually involve the neck, jaw or lower cheeks.
Lower facelifts are performed on the lower part of the face. It is often done to eliminate nasolabial folds or jowls, reduce sagging in the mouth or give the jaw a more definite shape.
Just as there are different kinds of facelifts, there are also different techniques used to perform them. For example, the surgeon might use certain tools to perform mid or lower facelifts that aren’t used in a traditional procedure. However, in most cases, the surgeon operates on the underlying muscles as well as the skin in order to achieve the best results.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Facelift?
Most candidates for this surgery are between 40 and 70 years old. The ideal candidate will be a healthy adult with realistic expectations. They will understand that the procedure does not stop the aging process and that it does not change who they are as a person.
A good candidate also has strong bone structure that can support the facelift. Candidates with less defined features may want to consider other options. A good candidate will also have skin that still has some elasticity and can conform to the new contours of the patient’s face.
